One's choice is always limited by what one has read, and of course one may
not have read enough of the contemporaries, and so it's safer to stick to
the dead. More importantly, naming favourites among living writers runs the
risk of those not included (particularly if they happen to be acquaintences
etc) being, shall we say, not charitably disposed -- something which doesn't
happen among those dead, or even if it does, doesn't really manifest itself
in scathing reviews etc.
