    But seriously, chaps, who is this bloke? Apart from
    the Dean of etc. at the Univ of Illinois? The moment
    my eyes caught his across this crowded room I was
    a goner. Until now, I'd assumed American academia
    was peopled exclusively by bearded, squishy-hearted,
    obsession-tortured, doe-eyed, puppy-eared, unendingly
    'respectful', avuncular wimps.

    There appears, thank God, to be at least one exception.
