American Gods

I haven't read 'American Gods' yet, but have been meaning to get a copy for ages, as apparently he got the opriginal idea from 'Eight Days of Luke', a book by children's writer Diana Wynne Jones. I get the impression from your comments -and the relative sizes of the books - that he takes the idea and runs with it. It really appelas and I'm glad to have a recommendation - I'll treat myself to the book. I also urge anyone who likes fantasy literature - I think someone recently mentioned Susan Cooper, who is really a great writer - to check out Diana Wynne Jones. She's been writing for a long time but hasn't received the recognition she deserves. Fun, satisfying magical stories which are perfect for devouring in one sitting. ANother fantasy/teenage writer who desrves great respect is Alan Garner, more 'serious' than D W-J, and well worth a read. I'm still working on his book 'Red Shift' which is his most dense and hard (emotionally speaking) book.

Recently, a lot of list time and energy seems to have been squandered on discussions which have degenrationed into the personal and often spiteful. I don't really want to enter into any of these as I think it would be nice if it was all dropped, but I would like to say that I look forward to the New Year and (hopefully) the return of some of the good discussion and insights which make this list a pleasure to be on.

Sorry if this message is riddled with mistakes, I',m streaming with cold and can't really see or type straight.

Best wishes to all, love, Lucy-Ruth x x x

So last week I started "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman and finished it a few
days ago and absolutely loved it. I highly recommend it to anyone interested
in mythology, gods in general, and an interesting little critique of American
pop culture, and one hell of a good read.

Best,
Levi
