Jim,

Thanks for the questions. I'll offer my own personal shots at answers.

"Is this really egotism, or is it just what we do all the time?"

Both.

"Isn't this just the type of prioritizing that goes on that determines the
type
of people we're going to be day in and day out?"

No, how we feel about art often has very little to do with the type of people
we're going to be. They were reading Goethe and listening to Mozart while
they were pushing people into ovens.   Just because my students might think CK
sucks and WaB is totally funny says little or nothing about how they're going
to treat people, really.

Later, you write:

"So on at least this level I do think it's more important to me than WatB's."

And that's cool. As my earlier post indicated, with the addition of that "to
me," I have no problem. Not even with your "in the long run" (which is a
series of moments and of specific sorts of decisions and prioritizations of your
own). But that's where the discussion should end, for me.

And so it will, as I am off to the last Bucs home game of the season.

It's been a disappointing year and we won't make the playoffs, but at least
there's one more chance to drink and yell this afternoon, and then I return to
preparing courses.

Have a great Saturday,

--John
