I was about 12, it was in the headboard shelf in my grandma's spare room,
when I first read it. I heard it mentioned often and the title intrigued
me. I didn't like it, I thought Holden was soft. I reread it a couple of
years ago and enjoyed it much more. We read Grapes of Wrath and various
other books in our modern American writers segment in HS but no Salinger.

The worst that could happen Tim, is that he will not like it, giving you the
opportunity to sing it's praises to him (poor guy).

I was a late bloomer -- read it for the first time close to the age of
30. But I think 14 is a good age too. It wasn't assigned reading for
me in HS either.
