She wouldn't let him cut himself off from everyone... >> No,I don't think she stood for that.Just because that can do with a title like The Catcher in the Rye,doesn't mean that that it is the way it was.I think that the catcher is the person who keeps everybody on the cliff to remain happy,or nice, like the girl who was singing the song.Holden wants people to notice the nice things within the world. But he isn't the catcher in the rye.He can't be,everybody falls going through life at times. He realizes the cruelty of the world.Everyone eventually does in their own way. They can't be the catcher. That's why he said that he knew it sounded crazy when telling Phoebe. And Phoebe is not the catcher in the rye either because she eventually will realize the things about the world and will truly be unhappy at times.Maybe she already has.She just represents the sweet and true innocence of a child. And Allie,he can't be the catcher in the rye because he died. He's the closest though because he didn't fall as much as most people. He didn't live long enough. He still thinks there can be a catcher in the rye because(maybe)he never really saw the falseness of the world. My thoughts on Allie are not well developed but I really don't think it was him.Nobody is THE catcher.Allie was the catcher for Holden.Everybody has a catcher to go on living.Whether it's a person,a certain perspective on how to live,or a desire of something you like to do.But these things(including Allie)are not really catchers. We all fall, except that we all help eachother stay happy even though we have fallen. The catcher in the rye is fictional. There is no catcher unless maybe it could be God himself. He keeps everything balanced.Or maybe not.I'm pretty sure about all those things except God being the catcher. It's an idea, though. It sounds a lot like the fat lady, doesn't it?To conclude,(I guess I have to)realizing the falseness of this world makes you like everybody else.We are not the catchers. It would just be a great thing to be.-----------Jared
