The homesteaders on the list will have heard me offer this before, but since the name has
come up again and there are a lot of new listmembers I thought I'd mention that I wrote a
very long essay (18 page Word document) a couple of years ago called "Death Is Not The End:
Love In The Time of Suicide (Last thoughts on Jerry Garcia & Kurt Cobain)" which I have on
my website: The direct link to it is:

It's a gigantic piece which took me six months to write. I edited it as best I could, yet
it's length makes it pretty unappealing for mainstream publishers, and god knows I've tried:
The Atlantic, Harpers, Granta, Playboy, Psychology Today, Rolling Stone, Spin, Utne, etc. I
touch on everything from the forces of World War II that basically created the baby boom,
clear up to the 90s and deal with it in a sociological way, not too dissimilar from a
head-on collision between Lester Bangs and Greil Marcus. I've had a lot of genuinely touched
people write very loving thank you notes to me and very humbling expressions of gratitude to
the piece, and sometimes I think that that's one of the reasons why I stay on this list. So
that whenever Kurt's name comes up I know it's my turn to be Catcher.

Have a good holiday season everyone. And let's all be careful out there, eh?

Take care,

Love,
Malcs
