I've had a few pieces of private mail asking whether the list is dead or sick. Although we had a severe disk problem two days ago (which has been fixed, and which did not cause us to lose any data), things are very quiet right now, all over. (I have to tend about 350 lists, and they're all awfully quiet. And my mailbox is finally down to less than a thousand new messages, which itself is cause for celebration.) Anyhow, I think the disk crisis was two days ago; I have a touch of the ComaFlu, the sickness that knocks you out completely, making you lose track of what day it is. To catch anybody leaving school for home, or those swearing off email for the holidays, or incorrigible last-minute-planners who are now planning what to do this week, or people like me who loathe the holiday season almost upon us: I've enjoyed the back-and-forth this year, and want to thank our fellow banana-citizens. I have learned a lot here from other Close Readers, and have even found a new reason to think positively about some details of my own life, which could not have happened if I had not been in the midst of this group. So, early best regards for the new year to y'all, and a note of thanks, silent subscribers or not! --tim
