Regarding John Lennon and Mark David Chapman and Catcher --
There's a great film on this --produced by Frontline --entitled < The Man
Who Shot John Lennon>.
The program outlines how Chapman obsessed with H.C. changes his name to
Holden Caulfield and travels to NYC to retrace Holden's journey --According
to the program and Chapman's own taped recorded words played throughout the
program -- He killed John Lennon because he discovered that Lennon had
become a phony, a reclusive business man rather than an idealistic spirit
claiming "Give peace a chance" --Chapman claims that he is what Holden
would have become --what Holden was capable of doing --I think that's the
part that is so fascinating ..a reader's identification with a literary
character is so strong that they become the character...rewrite the story
in reality. Forturnately or unfortunately, Holden has that kind of power.
