There is an abundance of evidence available in list archives to suggest
that I am a hearty proponent of off-topic posts. My scalp usually
tingles and I get all dizzy with glee when the list goes off-topic. And
I become more excited the more momentum an off-topic thread gains.
Anytime off-topic posts comprise more than 40% of the list's traffic, I
cancel classes and declare a holiday and dance out on the sidewalk in my
bathrobe, juggling candy canes.
Recent posts to the list peddling "Marxist" sentiment and reproaching
Will for somebody else's ingenuous pedagogical crisis were frowned on
not for their off-topicness (which scored a 7.5 on the overall appeal
scale), but for their obnoxiousness.
