Yeah, I see what you're saying, Scottie. I guess whenever you try to
take a step beyond merely enjoying a novel you take a step away from the
enjoyment of the novel. I think I said in an earlier post that doing a
long paper on Joyce's Portrait ruined Joyce for me. So it is a real
danger. But there are different kinds of pleasures to be derived from
reading.
In self defense, all I can say is that I wasn't really concerned with
proving or disproving Who Holden was Talking to (although trying to
answer the question itself can, I think, be very revealing in a rewarding
way) but was complaining about another book entirely :)
Course, in the process I guess I did demonstrate something else, though,
eh? :)
