Fate must have decreed this ... I sat down to watch TV yesterday and was delighted to find that the cable company had accidentally unscrambled all the channels we're not supposed to get (: Sitting down for my freebie I watched a 1954 Gene Kelly-Natalie Wood movie called `Marjorie Morningstar' (plot: young aspiring actress is instead caught in the drudgery of housewifery) Anyhow, I was peripherally watching this, and the Natalie Wood character injures her finger during a play rehearsal. She goes over to Gene Kelly who tests her finger in a movielike way and comisserates. `Yeah ...' she replies. `Uncle Wiggily ...' ! Now, what year was Uncle Wiggily the story? I'm thinking now that to describe a hurt limb in the 50's as an `Uncle Wiggily' may have been a stock phrase. Anyone got any relatives of that vintage they could check that out with? Either that or the inspiration came directly from this movie - which is more exciting but less likely. The movie, by the way, had slightly Glassy overtones to it - Natalie Wood was a *sort* of Franny character but I'm probably reading too much into it.
