It's far too easy to be over-cynical about these sorts of things. If you do that all the time you end up frowning all the way through something you really had a capacity for enjoying (you could say Holden is a victim of this).I think Christmas certainly has a meaning, you just have to dig for it a little rather than waiting for it to come to you. As for me, living in a suburb famous for offering a slap-up lights display (I myself am in charge of the display last year and spend most of last evening up on a ladder fussing over a strand of fairy lights that weren't happening).
