NAHH, Camille, it's not just a matter of the "section men" vs. the amateur readers. What made the Section men so bad was their attitude toward their subject--that they were above it, somehow--above the literature they studied. That's why they ruined every author they lectured about. There are literary types that actually "love" their subjects, and that's who you want filling in for the profs. And yes, I agree, the "amateur reader" can come up with a brilliant reading of a text. It's just a matter of an educated opinion being more worthy of respect than an uneducated one in general...
