Well look who the cat dragged in...

Greetings all,

For those who don't remember me I'm a former bananafish alumni who =
generally prayed aloud and shot his mouth off on this list for a couple =
of years who has arduously been building a multilingual, multicultural =
online journal and community of arts and ideas, =
http://www.towerofbabel.com , for a few years. In fact content from a =
couple of past and present bananafish is on the site, including Jim =
Rovira's piece on Catcher in the Rye. (Hi Jim! ...and Tim and Will and =
Sundeep and Brendan and etc)

Anyway, if Tim would allow my APB indulgence just this once, Jim just =
sent me a couple of posts about the Seattle riots from a couple of =
bananafish and I just thought I'd mention that Babel hasn't had a =
Feature for a few months so I've been very busy this week being =
completely consumed by the events (I live in the Seattle area) while =
simultaneously hitting as many mailing lists and discussion forums about =
WTO as I can seeking Anti-WTO protest eyewitnesses. If you have been a =
part of any of the demonstrations against the World Trade Organization =
not just in Seattle but anywhere else, Babel would love to feature your =
up close and personal accounts with the possibility of having your =
content and/or photographs/video featured in our pages in whichever =
language you can translate it into as long as it is also in English.=20

So far I've had quite a few bites:

A student at Reed College with plans to be an organizer and public =
interest
lawyer who came to protest who can also translate her piece into =
Spanish.

A webcast engineer for a Net firm downtown who protested all day with =
his
friends and then had a conversation for a few hours with a few of the
delegates, he has 40 minutes of protest video he wants to stream on my =
site,
he also went to the Jello Biafra, Krist Novoselic et al anti WTO Band

Another woman in her twenties who works as a union organizer for the =
Service
Employees International Union Local 6 here in Seattle. The SEIU =
contingent
was about 500 strong

And a freelance writer and activist working on globalization issues who =
is
based in London normally and also has info on the protests that happened
globally - in India, Geneva, Mexico, Panama,Paris, etc etc.

And that's just the first few bites.=20

Watching the police standoff at the KFC down from the Comet at 2 in the
morning in the pouring rain before it ended in tear gas has got to be =
the
most surreal thing I have ever witnessed on television. The Comet is my =
old stomping grounds. I used to practically pay rent on that place. I =
know that block better than the back of my hand.

So please pass along as you see fit:

Babel, the multilingual, multicultural online journal and community of =
arts
and ideas is seeking Anti-WTO protest eyewitnesses. If you have been a =
part
of any of the demonstrations against the World Trade Organization not =
just
in Seattle but anywhere else, Babel would love to feature your up close =
and
personal accounts with the possibility of having your content and/or
photographs/video featured in our pages in whichever language you can
translate it into as long as it is also in English. For more information
email Malcolm Lawrence, Editor-in-Chief at malcolm@towerofbabel.com

I hope the list is going well. Happy Holidays everyone! I'm going to =
Rome for New Years to visit some friends and finally meet the Italian =
translator of my first (still unpublished but available on the Babel =
site) novel. And what better place to spend Jubilee, breaking open the =
brand new millennium in the capital city of the former empire which once =
crucified but now is the last surviving patriotic stronghold of the man =
who is the hinge of history for most of the planet whose birthday is =
what the millennium is centered around. Go figure. If he had a grave =
he'd be spinning in it. ;-)

So in light of this recent martial law in our fair city (and if it could =
happen in Seattle it could happen anywhere) just remember to keep a =
clean nose and watch the plainclothes. You don't need a weatherman to =
know which way the wind blows.
=20
Take care of each other,

Malcolm Lawrence
