Dear Elizabeth!

PLEASE tell the joke. You're among friends--who have (by definition)
forgiven you in advance for any inherent ugliness; and who will bear with
the necessary asides and explanations because they understand the end to
which you're aiming....

I'm more concerned about the ethical implications of announcing that there's
a great joke but then refusing to tell it.

Cheers,

Paul

OSR--What's the best "joke" in the JDS canon? Although it's far from
"funny" (many jokes ARE) I'd have to argue that the very title "For
Esme--With Love and Squalor" ranks among the most touchingly titillating
phrases ever invented. It's poking fun at Esme, to be sure. And I guess
that could be described as cruelty. But it's gentle fun. And it's done
with such love that a knowing smile is almost inevitable.
