Here goes... A friend of mine, Janet, gave birth to a baby boy. She named him Michante. Her cousin (Dhabih, one of my closest friends) and I went to visit her. I asked her how she came up with the name Michante. She stated that it was a Sioux word for either beautiful or beloved, I don't remember which. Dhabih said, "ouch... Lakota, not Sioux. Sioux was a derogatory term used by an enemy tribe. That's like saying, 'This is my daughter, Beauh-fuw. It's a nigger word for beautiful.'"
