Ah Mattis! You've once again made my day! > > Speaking of (singing?) "Oh Canada", am I the only one who can't > come across these words without hearing Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" > in his head? > > all the best, > Mattis, still on his feet > BLUE must be the undisputed BEST ALBUM of the WORST (musical) decade in history--the otherwise eminently forgettable 70s... How about?: It's comin' on Christmas, They're cuttin' down trees, Puttin' up reindeer, Singin' songs of Joy and Peace, Oh, I wish I had a river, I could skate away on.... If those lines don't take you to the very heart of what is quintessentially Canadian (even if you happen to be Jewish?) you truly weren't born in the true north strong and free.... Or how about?: Sittin' in the bar of the Empire Hotel... Little money riding on the Maple Leafs.... It almost inspires me to go out and purchase a case of the Molson's Canadian that Ed is apparently so fond of.... How many fishes have ever skated on rivers? I remember a Christmas Day hockey game on the lake beside which my cottage is situated (and on which E. B. White once entertained James Thurber--but that, as they say, is another story).... One net was placed about twenty yards from our dock. The other net was 2 1/2 miles away, at the other end of the lake, not far from the dock of the boy's camp that EBW purchased in 1929--just before the crash (but that, again, is another story).... In my humble opinion, the greatest game in the world has been spoiled ever since the Mighty (FUCKING) Ducks entered the league. (Please excuse my language, but I must say that I think it's justified.) ...Ah, Joni! Ah, hockey! Oh Canada! (And by the way, Jim, Jackie Robinson broke into baseball NOT in Brooklyn, but in Montreal....) Cheers, Paul OSR--(apologies in advance if this is covered in the archive somewhere) How much do we know about Matthew Salinger, who's mentioned so beautifully in the dedication to F&Z ?
