As to the individual merits of SPR, I won't comment. I will say that when compared to The Thin Red Line it's simply out of its league. Thin Red is the most beautifully crafted film I've ever seen. Whereas SPR was a nice flick, Thin Red Line is artful. As to reading the book vs. watching the movie ... it all depends. Movies are a very different medium. I enjoyed reading Mrs. Robinson, but I preferred the film. There's something about the pool scene and the church scene that just didn't get captured by the words but did by the camera.
