"And you have to love me. You have to love the laces in my torn tennis shoes and the Juicy Fruit gum I'm chewing and my blue eye shadow and the sequins on my dress. I know you for the dreadful little bourgeios snob you are and it won't be easy but Salinger told you to do it. So try." Her hair was like fog over Secaucus and her eyes like cracked factory windows in St. Joseph. But I patted her gently on her pork loin thigh and said with a nervous laugh, "I'll try."
