	        	Loving the Fat Lady

As we began our descent into Newark, I woke from a brief sleep
and realized I was sitting next to Salinger's Fat Lady.

"I'm Salinger's Fat Lady," she said. "And you have to love me.
You have to love the laces in my torn tennis shoes

and the Juicy Fruit gum I'm chewing
and my blue eye shadow and the sequins on my dress.

I know you for the dreadful little bourgeios snob you are
and it won't be easy but Salinger told you to do it. So try."

Her hair was like fog over Secaucus
and her eyes like cracked factory windows in St. Joseph.

But I patted her gently on her pork loin thigh
and said with a nervous laugh, "I'll try."
