I agree. In California, I go to concerts, raves, and other happenings, but the written word seems almost dead here only to be replaced by disneyland, cheap hollywood fashions, and thousands of suburbanite families dragging their kids to "the city of angels." Here's a quick contrast between New York and L.A. UCLA and USC: both offer a pretty skimpy screenwriting program. NYU: offers a complete major in film/dramatic writing with many internships at local playshouses, miramix, HBO, SNL, etc.. Plus, so many people I've admired came out of New York: Kevin Spacey, J.D. Salinger, F.Scott Fitzgerald(I think), lenny bruce, jack kerouac(yes, i know he was born in Massachusetts, close enough), the Dalai Lama visits, martin scorsese, spike lee, oliver stone, arthur miller, etc.. etc.. I'm sorry if I've ruined any one's idea of California, and if you haven't been you really should visit, but it's like living in a test tube. our way of life is so different from the many other kinds out there. sorry for rambling, but visiting New York for me was like going to a whole other world. lol --- Ed Fenning <ed361@yahoo.com> wrote: > Thanks Gene for your kind thoughts about New York, I > don't live in the city yet but want to - grew up on > Long Island, lived in Boston for many years.
