Here's a question- forgive the shaky formulation, I had only the briefest
experience in English and the Theory of Criticism while in college- is
there a theological school of criticism where this sort of reading, (or
readings as Jim has pointed out) are considered and discussed. It seems
much (most?) of academia is rooted in atheism.

I think most of academia is rooted in Marxism, which is traditionally
atheist, but I don't think most of academia is necessarily atheist itself.
However, materialist premises pretty well guide academic discussion, because
it's hard enough making a convincing argument without bringing that much more
in to argue about. But there are plenty of academics out there who are Jews,
Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, etc., and it all inevitably guides their
readings on some level. It's more "in" to be Buddhist or Jewish than
Christian, of course, but when I was researching Waiting for Godot (for
example) I found straightforward Christian works on it, as well as Zen
interpretations.

eh...when you said "readings like this," which readings are you talking
about?

Jim
