Ordinarily, I would be much less delicate about this. Maybe it's that
I'm a little rattled (there is, inexplicably, a very large helicopter
hovering exactly one and a half blocks from my house, dangling an
equally large metal bell about 20 feet above the domed top of the St.
Louis Cathedral):

Seeing a movie generally gives one a much better opportunity to
discuss it. Listening to the qualified opinions of others...reading
the script...I'm not sure that will do. Typically, people discuss
plays independent from their performances, but they are, after all,
discussing plays, and not performances. On the other hand, film
critics often say very intelligent things about films, but they very
rarely define one's experience of a film entirely. Those who have not
watched _American Beauty_ but who find the uproar sufficiently
compelling may want to see it, regardless of the doubts they have
currently.
