All this talk of APDFB and the "meaning" of same, kinda makes me wish
Salinger had left the story as originaly submitted to the New Yorker. The
original story was simply about Seymour at the beach with Sybil and
afterwords his shooting himself in the hotel room. The New Yorker editors
felt there was not enough story to it so they sent it back to Salinger and
he added the front piece where we have Muriel and the phone conversation.
The reason for the suicide in the inception story had to be that he was
stuck in a bananafish hole, whatever that means. As I said I wish the
editors had left Salinger alone on this and published the original version
which is ,I think, a simpler cleaner story.
