When I was 12, living in San Diego, I was determined to culture myself.
(Pseudo-intellectualism, which I still haven't abandoned was kicking in) So I
went to the Tierrasanta Public Library and to the classics section. Closed my
eyes and extended forth my index finger where it met The Catcher In The Rye
by JDSalinger. I fell in love with it instantly, though I don't think I
could fully relate to it til about a year later, my Fresh. year of High
School. That's when I picked up CITR again, and then Franny and Zooey. And
subsequently 9 Stories and RHTRBC & S:IA (in that order. I remember going to
Super Crown hoping to buy Raise High because the title sounded more
interesting, but they only had 9 Stories) I felt particular enthralled and
connected with all of his stories, in a fanatical Franny-esque obsession.
Spring break freshmen year I went to the Arlington Heights library (quite
awhile away) and for 3 hours and approx. 20 dollars in dimes, I copied
Hapworth, The Varioni (sp?) Bro, Slight Rebellion Off Madison Ave, and Last
Days of Furlough (If only I had known 2 years later some lazy bastard would
give the link to a webpage containing all those stories conveniently, perhaps
I wouldn't've gone to so much trouble : ) But I think copying the microfilm
is a right of passage for bananafishes). A couple months ago, in a used
bookstore in Chicago I found the two volumes of Uncollected Short Stories
(the one with the odd family picture on the front..) which I swiped up,
literally clutching to the covers as I bought them for 3$ each. O bless the
naive used book store owners of the world. I have not read it yet, (with the
exception of the stories I copied out a couple years ago) I guess I'm waiting
for the right time. (wedding night, 18th birthday, I'm really not sure)

And now at the tender age of 16, I have one hardcopy, 3 red covered (I
have a fondness for the maroon colored, yellow titled edition) and 2 white
covered (yuck) copied of The Catcher In The Rye. 2 yellow-colored paperback
versions of RHTRB&S:IA (1 white covered), 3 copies of 9 Stories (one old one,
one white one, and a hard covered copy) and 2 F&Z (an old and new one, both
paperback). All of the old copies and the volumes of uncollected stories I
keep wrapped in several brown paper bags, hidden in a cigar box, below my
alarm clock radio.

Obsessed much?
