Just read, for the first time in twenty-plus years, "This Sandwich Has No
Mayonnaise", "A Boy in France", "Last Day of the Last Furlough", and "The
Stranger". Whatever obvious flaws _might_ be evident here or there, I must
say I found them to be a poignant trembling melody. Astonished that they
were written in the midst of it all. And what a surprise, in "The Stranger"
(published Dec. 1, 1945), to bump into That German Poet, the one with the
seven-syllable poem of a name (who I thought appeared no earlier than in
"The Inverted Forest").
