Wonderful Town, etcetera

I just picked up _Wonderful Town_ and read my first underpublished
Salinger piece. Encountering a bit of Salinger's work for the first
time is really something else. It was my first First Read in so long, I
had nearly forgotten what such glorious events were like. Oh, how
spoiled I was when I read Catcher, Franny, Zooey, RHTRBC, S:AI, and all
Nine Stories, all for the First Time, in only a few weeks!

Summary of my First Read of Slight Rebellion off Madison:

Surreal #1 - Reading about Holden Caulfield someplace other than
Catcher.

Surreal #2 - Reading about Holden Caulfield in words that aren't his
own.

Surreal #3 - Literally reading a scene out of Catcher someplace other
than Catcher.

Wow.

Now, like any addict having just received a direly needed hit, I'm
craving more. I'm suddenly inspired to throw hours upon hours of my
youth to the task of relentlessly pouring over microfilm. First I'll
hit the big libraries in the Bay Area. Does anybody have experience
with these? Any ideas of what I should expect to find or not find? And
I'm thinking that perhaps I'll dedicate some of those three months that
are situated between graduating high school and beginning college and
that are characterized by an obscene degree of personal freedom to a
monomaniacal quest for underpublished Salinger stories; they'll be my
Great White Whale. I'll call it a road trip; I'll surrender for
nothing; I'll drive clear across the continent stopping at every library
on the way.

Any suggestions, people?

And on a hardly related note, I was cleaning out my room when I found an
old Quality Paper Back Book Club catalog and I found something
interesting in it. There's a black and white photograph of a
distinguished-looking young fellow with slighly large ears, dressed in
what looks to be some sort of military garb. Next to it reads the
blurb: "He'd grow up to like bananafish and hate phonies. Do you
recognize him? See page 22 to enter our 'Name That Author' contest."

I guess I could scan the clipping and send it to the list if people are
interested (and if that sort of thing is allowed).

And on an entirely unrelated note, I've been accepted to Saint John's
College. Now my only obstacle is figuring out a way to pay for the
tuition which I very certainly cannot afford. I'm supposed to hear from
their financial aid people soon and I'm crossing all of my fingers and
toes. Wish me luck.
