Without having a hand on the contract, it may be that the young
Salinger, before be got to the point where he could pick and choose,
would take anything, especially from the magazine he most wanted to
crack. So he may have sold first serial rights and subsequent anthology
rights to the NY'er. (David Remnick is the magazine's new editor.)

The contract (or a mole at the magazine) would be able to tell much.
Barring one of those. we can only speculate....
