I had a good day today and some of it is sort of down to the list, so I
thought I'd share.

I started a new course today (Old English) and after the tutorial got
to talking with one of the guys from my class. This is a new and
pleasant experience for me as up til now none of the other English
students appeared to want to have anything to do with me. (It's this
public school - state school divide thing ;-)) We set off to go to the
library but when we arrived found we had both forgotten our cards, so
decied to go back to my house for coffee. We ended up having a brilliant
conversation about all the different things we are reading and working
on; he, like me, is interested in modern reinterpretations of old myths
and legends and I read him some of 'Orpheus, Eurydice, Hermes'. It was
so refreshing to meet someone who is doing my course because they are
really passionate about English, someone who wants to continue
developing ideas beyond what the syllabus demands. I was beginning to
doubt there was anyone else in the university who felt that way.

SO anyway, thanks y'all for introducing me to Rilke, and to Pynchon
(who we also talked about) and generally being interesting people who
keep me going when I am starved of days like today :-)

Love, Lucy-Ruth
