I found the below on this web page about Salinger
http://www.fringeware.com/subcult/J_D_Salinger.html

"Salinger begins to cultivate an attitude of silence. But spends some time
in Greenwich Village, going to clubs, playing poker. Remembered to have
arrogantly claimed that there weren't any decent writers after Herman
Melville, excepting himself."

Interesting in light of the recent discussion of "Moby Dick".

My question is: Did Salinger really say this?
