Richard was mostly just very lucky indeed. I believe he did have an
agent who was acting for him, but he just appeared at the right time.
When he was signed up the British publishing industry had a big thing
about very young talent and he managed to get onto that bandwagon: six
months before he was signed, the same publishing company rejected the
novel, and he hadn't made any great changes when it was signed. The book
is good, although not a great masterpiece. It is quite commercial
really, a sort of love story cum murder mystery. Many reviewrs compared
him to Donna Tartt who wrote The Secret History, and she is in fact one
of his favourite authors. In my opinion, his book is actually better
than hers, at least insofar as he keeps his plot moving and delivers
more or less what he promises.

Another factor which probably helped Richard is the fact he comes from
quite a good background - Eton educated and all that - so he is used to
maing contacts and is not awed by speaking with important people.

I don't know a lot about his favourite writers, but being an Englisg
student at Oxford he is obviously very well read indeed.

Thanks for your response Gene, it's made me think about the kind of
things people are likely to want to know. I'm really quite nervous as
I've never done an interview before. When I get it done, I will post a
copy for y'all to read.

Love, Lucy-Ruth
