Lester was the next door neighbor kid that sold Dad grass, right? :)

I think he had some similarities to Holden, but had grown a good bit more.
What was interesting to me about the movie was that it seemed to revolve
around being reconciled to your desires, and taking steps on your own to see
them fulfilled.

The end of the movie, as released, is really telling. The man had the
opportunity to immediately fulfill his desire, but by that time he had
outgrown them -- while the murderer never grew because he was never able to
reconcile himself with his (homosexual) desires.

I'd heard that an alternate ending was shot in which Dad has sex with the
young girl. Audiences hated it, because it left you feeling like he deserved
to get shot. That's why this ending was chosen...
