The picture of Muriel and Seymour that we get from the ither stories
indicates, however, that they probably did not go away together before
the war. It's not clear where they met, but I have always assumed that
it was in the early years of the war, as Seymour would then have been
caught up in the soldiers plus young girls social gatherings. In any
case, given that Muriel's mother is confused as to why Seymour hasn't
sediuced Muriel, it seems exremely unlikely that they would have been
away for a "dirty weekend", which is probably how many people would
have perceived it in that era.
