Dear Ed!

I was so shamefully illiterate back then. I wanted to produce a performance
(to tell you the truth, I wanted to play Jerry.... NO NOT THAT Jerry!) of
Albee's The Zoo Story, using "At the Zoo" as the themesong.... No wonder
the women weren't exactly swooning at my feet....

Well, Ed, there WAS Mrs. Robinson, and although she seemed unbelieveably old
to me back then, I don't know whether I'd kick Anne Bancroft out of bed for
turning to the Gideon Bible these days.... But I'll cede your point about
Elaine.... My wife looked like Elaine.... She still does! (One of my best
friends once told me he was sure that's why I married her.) I'm just not
sure where the two of them are going, sitting there at the back of the bus
at the end of the movie.... I only know that when I was fifteen, I wanted to
be with them....

Those are the worst kind! Did you have fantasies of hitch-hiking across the
country with her, going to look for America.... "I'm empty and aching and I
don't know why, Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike...." Because
of such constant replaying that the needle wore right through the vinyl
(Don't worry if we've lost the kids. Most of them hooked up their headsets
several paragraphs back.) lines like that will have to be surgically removed
from my memory.....

Preserve your memories,
There all that's left you.

Cheers,

Paul
