Well, I did read "Franny" all by itself, and didn't get back to "Zooey"
until TWO YEARS later. I still think "Franny" is Salinger's best work, and
it easily stands alone. For what it's worth, here's my top three:

1. "Franny"
2. _Catcher_
3. "De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period"

Yes, I too have an unexplainable liking for D'Smith. He is, in some ways,
the most fascinating protagonist of any _Nine_ story.
