What IS it about this Rilke chappie?
My Son the Philosopher (& ardent Yankophile) admits
that something you'd never find in an American publication
is the Pseuds' Corner of our own Private Eye - to which
readers submit the most hilariously pretentious bits of prose
they've come across that week.
I'd never do it to someone whose writing I usually so greatly
admire for its incisiveness, wit, humanity & wisdom.
But I'm tempted.
'... Even in the masterful middle period of Neue Gedichte,
the in-gazing has more than a touch of the flaneur .... a sensibility
that is almost flayed by existence .... The desire for transcendence
now dominates. ... in a sense transcends transcendence ...'
