There's absolutely nothing worse than the flouncer
who hovers forever at the door in the hope of being
begged to stay. I sure wouldn't like to be mistaken
    for such.

    It's just - as I've explained to Sofia - that I recently
became aware how tedious an elderly bugger can
become who drives everyone into the ground with
his invincible frivolity. Having cast myself in the role
of loveable old droll whom no one took seriously,
I had a sudden, piercing image of myself, rather, as
a wearisome, elderly bore who, on his best day, does
no more than raise a dutiful smile.

As Andy points out, I doubt I'll be able to sustain
the lurker mode for very long - & I'm far too locked
into the list ever to unsubscribe willingly - but I think
I should at least try to give my compulsive jokiness
(& other people) a bit of a break.

After all, there's something rather compelling about
the geriatric working away in ostentatious silence on
    his final three books.

    Scottie B.
