Dearest Fishes (you too Cecilia),

When I read this:

(See, now, I might have let that little parenthetical aside slide if
you
hadn't used all those exclamation points, O will.)

I immediately went looking for the offending exclamation points. There
were two, both quite properly put onto the page. Er, you know what I
mean. Then I remembered the source of the snarky comment. And I'm
afraid that we're going to have to call on Scottie's expertise for an
explanation here. Ms. B from Chicago has an almost pathological phobia
of exclamation points. There must be something somewhere in the
literature to enlighten us about this particular condition. Was she
potty trained too early or something?

It's especially strange since Cecilia's demeanour (not to mention her
delivery) is often worthy of an exclamation point. Or two. But she
shies away from communicating any excitement--even when she writes about
her beloved Cubs.

Hmmmm.... Can women suffer Oedipal complexes?

Why even Mrs. Spenser uses an exclamation point--two, in fact (one on
the bottom of page 5, and another in the middle of page 6 of Chapter 1
of CATCHER IN THE RYE)!

(That last exclamation point was QUITE intentional, by the way.)

Cheers,

Paul
