is - quite possibly- rather proud of her own cleverness. Yet
one could go on adding 'you don't know...'s indefinitely &
still retain a kind of dreary sense. She illustrates the way
the obsessive-compulsive can so easily mistake her own banality
for subtlety. In these parts, we admit such people to the psychiatric
ward. In France, you get elected to L'Academie francaise.
And in the U.S.? Tenure?
