I'll clap for Diego and even you, Scottie! In Jim's last post, he
mentioned a pretty cogent concern about our discussion...are we
talking about students who will become writers or general education
students who need writing skill? For folks who want to become
writers, rules rock! When you learn rules, be they grammar rules or
rules about poetic form or rules of story telling, you learn how
language works. "Kewl," as my students might say. But what about
teaching students to write? Writing and reading are tools of an
education. Students need varying degrees of literacy to get college
degrees and I work mostly with those just starting their work in
higher education. My course is a required, beginning level writing
experience and part of what students need is confidence.Practically
anyone's grammar can be torn apart and thanks to Derrida, it's clear
most writing is an ideal target for subversion. Yes, "meaning making"
may sound vague, but it's a helluva lot sweeter and more useful than
"grammar making." will
