Will seems to have directed his farewell at me.
I'm tremendously surprised. After all, he would have
had us believe he no longer deigned to read my squibs.
And, really now, who could have been more innocent
than myself in igniting this latest spat? I think he just
couldn't stop having a secret little peek.
Well, there you go.
It would, of course, be quite hypocritical of me to express
regret at his apparent departure. (I'm not wholly convinced
of its finality.) Flouncing in a grown man induces laughter
more than guilt. But then, as he points out, giggling is about
the only thing I do.
This list is ostensibly about JD Salinger. But, underneath,
what obsesses most of us, I think, is writing. And it has always
seemed to me that that is far too serious a business to be left
to the self-serious, the humourless, the earnest. We know what
Will saw as my sins. These last three were what I felt to be his.
Which was why I could never stay my hand.
