I don't know; I'd almost like to put modernism culminating with James
Joyce. At least, he's among those frequently installed atop the Olympus
of "high modernism." I like arguments for Thomas Hardy as the first
modernist--more a function of his poetry than his novels, though. many
late Victorian writers and thinkers (including the social critics)
anticipate Modernism--the modernism that seems to have ended with Joyce.
Let's call "modernism" anything that was a direct result of various crises
of various sorts in late Victorian thought.
