While I feel everyone here are making some great points, I would like to
confirm the fact of openly gay men not being alowed to serve. Just read
"Biloxi Bluses" by Neil Simon to see how the army treated a gay man back
then. In the play a homosexual character was arrested and charged for
bein gay. I think it is destructive for everyone involved to glamorize
the past and make statements that indicate that today we are treating
people worse than before. The only thing different now is that we feel
comfortable talking about these issues, where they were truly swept
under the rug back then. Hence my ultimate agreement that Salinger would
have hinted and used stereotypes of the time to suggest anything of the
sort about Eric. just my dime's worth (factored for inflation.)
