Yes, stereotypes do exist. Yes, stereotypes are gross
overgeneralizations, often of minority groups and sometimes even of
majority groups, which are used to create fear or distaste for what is
not familiar to us. However, if we deny Salinger the use of stereotypes
or other literary clues we risk missing the subtler points of what is
being written about. We also risk imposing our own phony 'political
correctness' by viewing his time with revisionistic eyes.
