so i get this paper back and it has a 'b' on it. and i'm like, 'what the
hell is this?' i mean, i got hemingway and salinger and shakespeare (okay, just
a little of the bard) all in the same cohesive paper, y'know.
turns out i was too busy blindly following my idols to do any real
criticism. the paper concerned the different views of hemingway and salinger as
set forth in _the sun also rises_ and _citr_, respectively. the gist of the
paper was that hemingway devoted his novel to showing people who deal with (and
contribute to) the insincerity and phoniness of adulthood, while salinger dealt
with a character devoted to circumventing the crap associated with adulthood. i
thought the paper was pretty good, but one of the comments my professor made
really got my gears turning. he said that the scene at the end of citr where
holden has gotten phoebe to ride the carousel was not a successful attempt at
preserving the innocence of childhood, but was rather the illusion of such
success. he noted that this was one of the weak points of the novel and that it
seemed to end there not because holden had achieved what he was seeking, but
because to go any further would reveal the illusion for what it is.
i don't like hearing the words weak points and salinger in the same
sentence, but he makes a good point. any comments? also, does anyone have any
information regarding an ernest hemingway mailing list? if so, please post it.
much thanks,

     ms
