one of the best ways to understand allie may be kenneth's death "An Ocean
Full of Bowling Balls"...or at least feel it more directly, but that's an
unpublished story only readable from Princeton's rare book
collection...but I think critics have addressed steven's q's and mark's
response and would suggest looking at "In Memorium: Allie Caulfield in
TCITR" by Edwin Haviland Miller and "Allie and Phoebe: Deathand love in
JDS's
TCITR" by David Burrows. If I recall correctly, James Bryan also focusses
on Allie's death in his "The Psychological Structure of TCITR." I
recommend any of these pieces as 'blue chip stocks' in the Salinger
Industry! will
