I agree with the sentiment expressed by a few people already -- Mark
Chapman's motives are much better explained by chemical imbalance than by
his adoration of "The Catcher in the Rye." That being said, I do want to
direct all interested parties to an interesting essay about Chapman and
"Catcher." While I think the author strains to make some of his
connections, it's still an intriguing essay -- he gets really specific
about how he thinks Chapman *mis*read the novel. It's called "On First
Looking into Chapman's Holden." It's in the journal American Scholar, #52
from 1983.
