holden as a god. yes. i'd say i definitely agree with that. holden is
my god. i completely identify with holden. i am holden in many ways.
and since i read him for the first time in the eighth grade (8 years
ago)(by my own choice, not influenced by any reading assignment or
anybody else), holden has permeated my existence. (and since i've
found this list, he's permeated each and every one of my days, too.) i
think that some have even found it hard to understand where i am
coming from because they haven't read 'catcher' or they didn't get out
of it the same things that i do/did. well, i guess i'm going to shut
up now because, after rereading this, i think i sound like a freak.
it's just that i feel very passionately about holden and franny. and,
well, everything that salinger has written. -JeN

I somewhat agree, but don't you think you're being a little harsh?
Whether the person was "required" to read JDS, or "discovered" him, the
fact that he or she appreciates and enjoys him should be what's
important. I myself wasn't required to read him, but in 9th grade we had
to do a book report on a book of our choice. I chose CITR. However, I
didn't just "discover" him out of the blue. In reality, the week before
in class, we had discussed books that are often banned and CITR was one
of them. I thought, "Hey, why the hell not?" and immediately fell in
love with the story, the style, and JDS. Since then JDS (his stories
actually) have been everything from an inspiration (the reason I was an
English major) to a few minutes of stolen pleasure.

So my question to you is, would someone like me piss you off? Someone
who admires JDS (thinking of him as my God is a bit drastic), and yet,
was turned on to him in a high school English class. Shouldn't we just
be glad that JDS continues to be appreciated, regardless of how he is
first introduced to those people? (I'm not trying to start anything
here. I'm just curious to know why you're so angry about the subject.)
