A convention popularized in usenet groups.  Probably started as a means of
appeasing people who complained about posts being off-topic.  It's short
for "obligatory Salinger reference."

Rec.arts.books gets over 100 posts a day, on average.  A favorite activity
of self-appointed group police is to reply to a post (a copy included) and
announce sternly that the post features nothing especially about books. 
"What's the big idea?  I thought this was a *books* newsgroup!!  How come
you're not talking about books??" 

ObSalinger:  "JD Salinger" is an anagram for "girls jeand"
