i'm sorry to add my little spiel to the mix just as the whole debate is
dying down and people are starting to agree...

hippies. not meaning to offend the 'dope-smoking man-kissing' (1)
members of the list but here's my stance. i'm eighteen. born 01 january
1980, barely missing the end of morally confused 1970s and thrown head
first into the dawning consumerism of the 80s.

my only experience of hippies is of various friends' parents, and quite
honestly, it's not always pretty. they've either 'sold out' and settled
down, or else are complete degenerates incapable of proper parenting.
the idealism behind the whole hippie thing is truly noble, but sometimes
when it comes to practicality in the real world, theories just fall
short. hippie parents have a tendency to recall all the problems that
repression caused them in the 1960s and try to correct the whole thing
in one generation. this leads to some insanely liberal parenting
policies. i really don't care what anyone says on this, i maintain that
frequently sharing joints with your mum when you're twelve is not a
productive thing.

everyone is entitled to have their own beliefs, but when your stance
starts to cause problems, deep-rooted, serious problems for you kids,
then it's time to wonder if you should go to the pta meetings and try,
just try, to act like an adult. you can be a grown up hippie, still
believe in peace, love and understanding, and at the same time look
after your responsibilities and interact with the 'straight-pegs'.

(1) i am not expressing any form of homophobia or anti-drug zealotry.
this is a quote taken from the marketing mogul in the movie 'one night
stand'.
